Human Rights Day is celebrated on 10 December around the world. This year marks the 77th anniversary of the United Nations (UN) adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – a landmark document that upholds the basic human rights every person should have, no matter where they live.
On 17 December, it will be one year since the UN General Assembly adopted the Resolution of The role of Ombudsman and mediator institutions in the promotion and protection of human rights, good governance and the rule of law. The UN resolution recognises the important role Ombudsman institutions play in raising global awareness to promote and uphold the protection of human rights.
Our office continues to receive complaints that raise important human rights issues, reaffirming the essential role of the Ombudsman in providing independent oversight of government decisions. Through this oversight, we help ensure that the fairness, dignity and the rule of law are upheld across public administration, strengthening trust in the systems that serve the community and safeguarding the rights of all South Australians.
